The most common use of lavender oil is to help relieve stress through aromatherapy, but did you know you can also use this wonderful oil to relieve itchy skin conditions such as rashes?

Lavender is very well known for its pleasant aroma and gorgeous purple colouring – as humans we’ve been using it for thousands of years for many different types of medicinal and topical applications.

Lavender oil works wonders on skin for allergy relief

Everyday millions of people around the world suffer from allergies. So what is an allergy? Basically it’s an over reaction of our immune system to various substances – for example, pollen, dust, food, animal hair or synthetic materials can all be culprits.

Allergies will cause a number of different inflammatory reactions within the body such as skin rash, itchy or watery eyes, headaches, runny nose or itchy skin.

How does lavender oil work on a skin rash?

Because lavender oil works as a natural antihistamine due to it’s anti-inflammatory properties, it’s the perfect all-natural alternative for skin rashes. Chemical-based drugs and lotions are most likely doing more harm than good to your body, whereas lavender oil is totally natural to treat skin rash.

Not only will lavender oil help treat your skin rash and headache due to allergies, but it will have a relaxing and calming effect on your whole body.

Using lavender oil to soothe itchy skin

There are a few ways you can use lavender oil to treat an itchy skin rash:-

Directly on the skin
Add a few drops of lavender oil to a tablespoon of carrier oil (such as olive oil, almond oil or jojoba oil) then rub gently to the itchy area on the skin 2-3 times a day.

Diffuser
Lavender oil can be used in a cold diffuser to treat a skin rash – use your diffuser for about 15-20 minutes every few hours. You can even place your diffuser next to your bed to help get a better night’s sleep in order to deal with itchy skin from allergies.

Inhale
Rub a couple of drops of pure lavender oil into the palm of your hands, then cup them over your nose and inhale deeply for 4-6 breaths. You can also add a couple of drops of lavender oil onto some cotton balls, secure them in a ziplock bag so you can take them with you anywhere throughout the day.

Is lavender oil good for skin rashes?

Because lavender acts as an astringent, it can help treat small areas of swelling on the skin. Whilst it doesn’t help to relieve pain, it does help with relaxation and deeper breathing, meaning any discomfort or pain associated with a skin rash will be lessened.

If we are more relaxed and centred due to breathing in the scent of lavender oil, then our skin will react accordingly as opposed to feelings of anxiousness, etc.

Lavender oil can cause potential skin reaction

Lavender is one of a few essential oils that can be used directly on the skin. Having said that, a minority of people may have a slight allergic reaction to using the oil, actually causing the skin to break out in a rash.

You can try diluting the oil in a 50/50 solution of water, but if you do suffer from sensitive skin it’s always a good idea to perform a patch test first.

Just because lavender is a natural remedy, doesn’t necessarily mean it will be an effective treatment for your particular skin rash. If you have a skin condition that has been ongoing, it might be a good idea to make an appointment with your healthcare professional.
